thoughts on having enough bread

"Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread?"

A question Jesus asked his disciples when they were faced with the physical reality of having one loaf of bread left to split between a boat of road-weary folks.

To give context for why this was actually a very reasonable thing for Jesus to ask, flip back a few pages or read the passage below:

14Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”b 16And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20“And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?” (Mark 8:14-21)

Those who were anxious about not having enough to eat had just recently witnessed Jesus multiply a little to feed two massive crowds of people. Not only did Jesus feed them, they filled baskets and baskets full of abundant leftovers once everyone had had their fill.

Have you been there in the disciples' shoes?

Wondering how you're going to have enough to pay that bill?

Wondering how you're going to have enough will power to get up in the morning?

Wondering how you're going to have enough courage to have that conversation?

I have!

How easily our physical reality causes us to forget the reality that remains steady beyond our understanding. Jesus knows all about how our bodies influence our trust. He lived it! I think that's part of why He shared what He did in Matthew 6.

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on...Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow or reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them...Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil or spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown in the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  (The verses that stuck out to me the very most from Matthew 6:25-32)

We have enough, friends. I reckon if we'd look at Jesus' face before we paid attention to our empty bread box, our life would hold a whole lot less worry. I think we'd look a lot more like tiny me in that photo, trusting and enjoying the sweetness of not only having enough, but having 12 baskets full of extra abundance (or in my case, a whole face full of marshmallows).

Love you so!
